Japanese Kabuki Masks

Japanese Kabuki Masks


Students will learn about the history of Japanese Theater with a focus on Kabuki Plays. They will learn about the Actors who are responsible for of the creation of the many colorful characters that have formed a beloved part of Japanese history, and are still cherished by the Japanese today. (The warrior characters are especially exciting!) They will create their own unique version of a Kabuki mask using the same broad brush strokes and colors that would have been used in 1697!



Buffalo Hide

The Native Americans of the Central Plains used buffalo hides to record pictorial histories, or winter counts calendars that kept track of significant during the year. Stories were passed on from generation to generation by spoken word and by pictures or “pictograms” that were painted on buffalo hides. In this class, students will learn many of the basic symbols and their meanings that were used by the Plains Native Americans, and then create their own stories and recorded events on a unique “buffalo hide”. These symbols make for a great “secret code” as well!

The Kuba peoples, who live in what is now known as the Democratic Republic of the Congo, have one of the most highly developed legacies in African mask making traditions. There are over twenty different mask types. The most famous masks tell stories of ancient Royal lineage and events. Kuba masks are famous for their beautiful shapes, rich colors, and patterns. Students in this class will learn about the symmetry and geometry of Kuba masks while creating and embellishing their own masks.

Historically, China is believed to be the first country to have made decorated fans over 3,000 years ago. In this class, students will learn the traditional techniques of fan painting on their very own fan. They will create unique, amazing and colorful Dragon designs with an emphasis on the traditional Dragon symbols which are such an important part of Chinese culture even today.
